Originally called Alkali, the city of Arlington was founded in 1882 and incorporated in 1885.

Lake Umatilla, the basin created by the construction of John Day Dam, resulted in Arlington being demolished and relocated in the period between 1958 and 1963. Most buildings were torn down but some were relocated to the new city, 1/4 mile south. The marina of the Earl Snell Park now covers what was Arlington's downtown area.
